The political spectrum in the United States is typically divided into left-wing and right-wing. The middle of the political spectrum is where most people fall. The Middle of the Left Wing
In American politics, the center-left comprises moderate liberals who support social equality and a mixed economy. They may consider themselves left-wing on some issues while being centrist or seriously right-wing on others.
For example, they may support civil rights and affirmative action but oppose income redistribution via taxation and government spending (or may only support it to a limited extent). They might also thermselves as advocates for the environment but be reluctant to embrace any policies that would raise taxes or interfere with business interests. Fiscal conservatism is another key characteristic of the center-left.
In foreign policy, center-leftists are typically dovish, supporting diplomacy and multilateralism over military interventions. They also tend to be supportive of free trade agreements.
The Middle of the Right Wing
When people in the United States talk about the “middle of the political spectrum” they are usually referring to what is called the “center-right” and “center-left.” The “center-right” is the half of the spectrum that is to the right of center, while the “center-left” is the half that is to the left of center. In other words, the center-right includes all those positions that are slightly to moderately right-of-center, while the center-left includes all those positions that are slightly to moderately left-of-center.
The terms “right wing” and “left wing” do not refer to positions on the political spectrum, but rather to two different approaches to politics. Those on the right wing tend to focus on individual rights and freedoms, while those on the left wing tend to focus on economic and social justice.

The “middle” of the political spectrum in the United States can be difficult to define because the country has a two-party system. The middle would generally be considered to be moderate members of either the Democratic or Republican Party, depending on the issue. For example, on economic issues, moderate Democrats might be fiscally conservative but support social welfare programs, while moderate Republicans might be fiscally liberal but oppose abortion.
The Middle of the Right Wing in the USA
Conservatism in the United States is a political and social philosophy based on preference for traditional institutions and social conventions. Conservative ideas and policies emphasize the need for stability and continuity, instead of radical change. American conservatives generally prefer limited government, lower taxes, decentralized decision-making, and a strong national defense. Social conservatives oppose abortion and same-sex marriage, while some economic conservatives favor deregulation and restrictions on labor unions.
The Republican Party is the most prominent conservative party in the US, although there are also conservative independents and Democrats. The conservative wing of the Republican Party is sometimes referred to as the “religious right” because of its focus on social issues like abortion and same-sex marriage.
Some of the most prominent American conservatives include former presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, as well as commentator Rush Limbaugh and Fox News host Sean Hannity.
