The Tea Party Movement
The Tea Party Movement is a right-wing political movement that began in 2009 in the United States. The movement is primarily made up of conservative and libertarian-leaning Americans who are opposed to government spending and taxation, and what they see as an intrusion of the federal government into their personal lives.
The name “Tea Party” is a reference to the Boston Tea Party of 1773, when American colonists protested against British taxation by dumping tea into Boston Harbor. The modern Tea Party movement adopts similar rhetoric and iconography, and has been particularly critical of the government’s bailouts of the financial industry and automobile industry following the 2007-2008 financial crisis.
The Tea Party has been generally supportive of the Republican Party, although there have been some splits within the movement on issues such as immigration and same-sex marriage. In the 2016 presidential election, Tea Party activists supported several candidates from outside the Republican establishment, including Donald Trump, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz. However, since Trump’s election, the Tea Party has largely faded from prominence.
The Republican Party

The party grew out of opposition to the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which allowed for expansion of slavery into newly formed territories. The Act was highly controversial, prompting a large faction within the Whig Party — called “Free Soil, Free Labor and Free Men” — to break off and form a new party committed to halting the expansion of slavery.
The Conservative Movement
In the United States, the term “conservative” generally refers to a political philosophy that favors limited government, individual freedom, and free-market capitalism. The conservative movement emerged in the early twentieth century as a response to the progressive movement’s call for greater government intervention in society.
Today, the conservative movement is associated with a number of political parties and organizations, including the Republican Party, the Heritage Foundation, and the American Enterprise Institute. Prominent conservative leaders include Donald Trump, Rush Limbaugh, and Newt Gingrich.
The Alt-Right
The alt-right, short for alternative right, is a far-right political movement that emerged in the early 2010s. The movement is primarily white nationalist, and its members believe that white people are facing an existential crisis due to declining birth rates, mass immigration, and cultural displacement.
The alt-right is characterized by a hostility towards democracy and egalitarianism, and a embrace of various forms of authoritarianism. The movement has been described as racist, xenophobic, anti-Semitic, and misogynistic.
The alt-right has been largely defined by its online presence, particularly on sites like 4chan and 8chan. The movement has also been associated with the rise of Donald Trump, who has been described as its figurehead.
