The French Revolution is perhaps the most significant event in the history of the political left; it witnessed the overthrowing of an absolutist monarchy and its replacement with a system of representative democracy. More recently, the left has been associated with the civil rights and feminist movements in the United States, as well as with socialism and communism around the world.
In general, those on the political left are opposed to hierarchy and believe that everyone should have an equal say in decisions that affect them. They are also critical of established authority and oppose discrimination on the basis of factors like race, gender, and sexual orientation. The left is often associated with progressive policies like universal healthcare and higher taxes on the wealthy.
The Right
The political terms “left” and “right” were first used during the French Revolution of 1789 when members of the National Assembly divided into supporters of the king to the president’s right and supporters of the revolution to his left.
As you can see from the chart below, in the United States “liberal” is used to describe those on the left side of the spectrum, while “conservative” is used for those on the right. This can be confusing for people from other countries because in most places “liberal” references someone who is economically conservative (in favor of free markets) and “conservative” refers to someone who is socially liberal (in favor of personal freedoms). In other words, in the United States, your politics might be left or right, but your views could be described as liberal or conservative.
The American right is often associated with capitalism, conservatism, laissez faire economics, limited government intervention in business and personal affairs and a defense-minded foreign policy. The Republican Party is considered to be on the right side of the political spectrum.
The Importance of the Two-Party System
The United States has always had a two-party system. From the nation’s early days, two political parties have developed — one championing more decentralized government and the other arguing for a more powerful central government. This division between federalists and anti-federalists, later manifested in the form of the Democratic-Republicans and the Whigs, grew out of different views on how best to govern the young nation.

While third parties have managed to garner significant support at various points throughout history, they have never come close to winning a presidential election. In most cases, their presence has only served to siphon votes away from one of the two major party candidates and hand victory to the other side. As a result, American presidential elections are effectively two-party races.
This is not to say that third parties are completely powerless or irrelevant in American politics. They play an important role in bringing attention to issues that might otherwise be overlooked by the major parties. In some cases, they have even managed to effect change within one of the major parties by pushing them to adopt some of their positions. Nevertheless, it is clear that America’s two-party system is here to stay.
